McArdle Auctioneers Five Generations Spanning Three Centuries

Philip A. McArdle & Son Limited Auctioneers is a well-known Dundalk family based Auctioneering Firm established since 1860. The business, which is longstanding family tradition within the McArdle Family, now in its Fifth Generation, provides a wide range of services to all sectors of the Property Market.

The Firm is headed by Mr Anthony McArdle SCSI, RICS. who is the fourth generation of the McArdle Family to maintain the auctioneering business established in 1860 by Anthony's Great Grandfather Michael McArdle, in Crossmaglen South Armagh, trading at that time under the name Michael McArdle & Son.

The family business was extended to Dundalk in 1926 by Philip A. McArdle, Anthony's Grandfather, who initially operated an Auctioneers office together with a seven day licence premises and General Grocer along Bridge Street Dundalk Town Centre. Philip A. McArdle accommodated the first Auction rooms in Dundalk upon the firm's premises and established the tradition that property sales would be conducted in house upon the Auctioneering premises at 3 o'clock on a Monday afternoon.

In 1960 the business assumed corporate status and was incorporated as Philip A. McArdle & Son Limited, a distinct entity to its origins in Crossmaglen some 100 years earlier. Anthony's Father, Anthony A. McArdle took over the running of the business from his Father Philip A. in 1961. In a strategic move, the Company premises were relocated to more extensive premises on Francis Street, positioned within the commercial centre of Dundalk town.

The premises accommodated two Auction rooms, the larger of which has a capacity to seat seventy people and in addition to many prestigious residential and commercial auction sales continues to host the sale of the most expensive agricultural land sold in Ireland for many consecutive years. The increased activity within the Commercial property sector and the increasing need for the formal arrangement between parties to Commercial transactions, particularly in the eighties, allowed the business to develop into the technical side of the profession notably Landlord & Tenant property arbitrations.

Anthony McArdle Junior who took over the running of the business in 1986 maintains the family tradition in the auctioneering business and the firm continues to provide all property services from their offices located upon Francis Street Dundalk. Today Philip A. McArdle & Son Limited Auctioneers currently provide a complete range of property services as members of the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
